I make large textile paintings and art quilts, often in bright colours. These are made of cloth which I have made using a number of techniques – hand dyeing, printing, mark marking, painting and discharging plain cloth. This fabric is either used as whole cloth or cut up and re-arranged before it is machine stitched to integrate the design.
My work is mostly abstract and has over time evolved from “improv” piecing of dyed cloth through fabric collages to stark graphics and more latterly, painted works using acrylics and handmade brushes. I am probably a frustrated painter. Due to my mathematical background, circles are a recurring shape. I delight in bright colours which reflect my African childhood and also a more grungy palette reflecting the decayed buildings of my travels in India, the Far East and Middle East. My work is best displayed in large rooms where the viewer can stand back and absorb the joy I have in adding colour and marks to fabric. website: www.chrisse.co.uk email: [email protected] |
